I was surfing, and as usual, doing not-so-smart searches. I looked up “microsoft”, and found….

Have you noticed? This site may harm your computer.

At first I thought, “Was it another step or google taking-over the world?”. Then I looked up “Google” and found, similar results. After several tests, it looks like Google marked every site as “This site may harm your computer”.

In few minutes I’ll upload more pictures or this one-time adventure.

About 60 minutes ago, Google started marking ALL results as “This site may harm your computer”. When you clicked on the URL, it led you to the usual page of “Copy the URL if you want to continue, or watch our diagnostics”. When you tried to see why the site was marked, it showed a server error. Now there is no more “This site may harm your computer”.

When I searched for other websites who was marked before as “This site may harm your  computer” I found out the Google has completely erased the line. Which might mean two things.

1. Google has solved the problem but had to mark all sites as safe again, so its a “fresh start” for all. But then, Google might (and probably does) have backups.
2. Google has completely erased the “module” of “This site may harm your computer”, probably temporarily.

As far as I saw, the impact was global - It wasn’t just Google.Com, It was on ALL Google servers.

Google’s Response:

Summary: “We had a problem with detecting the danger websites, and all sites were marked as not-safe.”

Long story, Summarized from StopBadware.Org: and the long-explanation from Google:

By a mistake, all sites containing a slash(”/”) were marked dangerous. That was probably caused since “/” usually means “all files”, and in this case - all websites. We have worked to repair the problem and now its fixed.

Google has started by announcing that the source of the problem was StopBadware.org. StopBadware posted a response and clarified that StopBadware.org DOES NOT provide Google any source of danger websites. Google updated their announcment and said the problem was in their servers.

Note to the GMail Users: Some of the emails people might’ve sent you in the time of the incident might have been send to the SPAM box.

Some cool things that happened: StopBadware.org site jumped from alexa rank of about 35,000 to 25,000 - it means hundreds of thousands of new unique visitors =)

Clarify: As I said before, “When I searched for other websites who was marked before as “This site may harm your  computer” I found out the Google has completely erased the line. “. When I re-checked them today it appears that they aren’t marked as “may harm your computer”, but other sites are still marked. so it probably means, (Explanation then I continue):

Google update its list of “may-harm-your-computer” from time to time. Its also possible that when they made the update that caused the problem, in the same time, the sites were safe again.

What do we learn from the story? Google can make mistakes, and, being marked as “this-site-may-harm-your-computer” at Google might also cause your emails to land on the spam box.

Basically, To see what position is a website on Google, you can always do it manually.

But, There are some tools allowing you to do it online.

One good to see “What position my site has in google”, is Exact-Factor. You can see everything on the website: exactfactor.com. with this site you can check page position.

Many people wonder - What is PageRank? How to check page rank? How to check your page rank?

PageRank is a one of more then hundred different scales google use to evaluate the quality of a site.

Minimum PageRank is 0, and maximum is 10.

Many SEO gurus think that today, the PageRank almost doesn’t affect a website position.

That looks partly true - although by searching one word or another, usually the first page’s websites will have more pagerank then the websites on page 3-4, but usually the order of the results wont be the same as the PageRank.

How do you check your page rank - or check page rank of any website? Download Google toolbar, Which give you the PageRank of any website you want.

But, PageRank is the only Rank people think google gives out. But, I will give you a little hint.

You can check the website indexed webpages by searching on google “site:domain.com”. That will give you another “scale” to determine if a website is realy a quality website.
